While developing as an artist, I have been most influenced by representational painters such as Rembrandt, Goya and Andrew Wyeth, who create drama by juxtapositioning light and dark. Wyeth's ability to balance abstraction with compellingly detailed portraits and landscape continually astonishes me.
His mastery of light interests me the most. Light has a way of erasing edges, creating mysterious shadows full of surprises, and playing across the surface of water. My recent landscapes are portraits of light, a moment captured, and my effort to reveal something that was initially concealed. When the boundaries are dissolved between self and the environment, I can glimpse things that were previously unknown to me.
